Wedding Photography Styles

As you start your search for the perfect wedding photographer,
get familiarized with the different styles and approaches out there. Many
photographers overlap between a couple of these categories. Take a browse through,
hopefully, it helps you decide how you want your big day to be captured!

Traditional

Traditional wedding photography also referred to as
classic, has a strong emphasis on posed portraits. Think of the photos from
your parent’s, or grandparent’s wedding, where the whole family is lined up in front
of the church doors. Of course, the background doesn’t have to be a church, but
the static everyone looking into the camera is the key element. While posed family
portraits are taken at most weddings, a photographer who has a traditional
style will spend more time taking these classic shots. This is the pro to hire
if you have a huge list of family formals to take, and for you, those are the
most important photos from the day.

Documentary / Photojournalistic

The documentary or photojournalist photographer aims to be a
fly on the wall. They want to capture authentic moments and emotions from the day,
with minimal interference. They try to be discreet and will catch scenes where
you didn’t even realize they were present. This is a great choice for a couple
who wants their whole day captured, but also wants to stay in the moment and not
be posing or setting up shots all day. Don’t worry, when it’s time to take
portraits, they’ll still tell you what to do with your hands.

Editorial

The editorial photographer is similar to the documentary
photographer but gives a bit more direction. They still want to capture that
candid, authentic emotion, as your mom helps you lace up your wedding dress.
But, they might ask you to stand where the light is the best, and if they can clean
up some of the champagne glasses scattered around the room. It’s still real,
just slightly styled. They might also spend more time getting those detail shots
juuust right.

Landscape

These photographers specialize in getting those absolutely epic
landscape shots, where you wonder if the bride and groom had to hike into that
mountain range (sometimes yes!). The landscape wedding photographer is a popular
choice for those eloping in an amazing natural location. Some of them even do double
duty as wedding planning and will help with the logistics of the elopement.

Toned / Filtered

These are the photographers who set themselves apart by the
way they edit their photos in post-production. They often used filters to tone
the image and achieve a certain look. An example that is currently trending is
dark and moody wedding photographs. Other toning styles include vintage, matte-look,
and desaturated. This wedding photography style can be a seductive choice because
it’s very contemporary and visually exciting. However, your wedding photographs
may also become dated looking quickly. If you’ll be offended 10 years from now
if someone can guess the year you were married from your wedding photos, this
is not the direction for you. Some photographers might be willing to do two
edits for you, one that’s processed more naturally and one with a filter
applied (the results won’t be quite as good as someone who specializes in the
look, but it might satisfy your need for that uber-trendy style). It’s common
to receive a blank and white set, along with colour.
